Family Focused Protocol

The Family Focused Protocol is a new mandatory family law process for the Alberta Court of King's Bench. These recent amendments to the family law process have significantly changed the way divorce, parenting, support and property matters move forward through the courts. The Family Focused Protocol requires certain steps be completed before the Court will assist in non-emergency family matters. These steps include:

Only once the above steps are completed can individuals then seek to advance through the Courts. This protocol applies to both the Alberta Court of King's Bench and the Alberta Court of Justice.

These new requirements can be time consuming and labour intensive. Let the lawyers at Capital City Law guide you through this new process and towards a final resolution of your family law issues.

  • The filing and service of commencement documents;

  • The filing and exchange of financial disclosure;

  • Attending or attempting alternative dispute resolution (ADR);

  • Completing the Parenting After Separation seminar; and

  • For people without a lawyer, meeting with a family court counsellor.
